Portel Municipality is placed south in Évora district, bordered with Évora, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Moura, Vidigueira e Cuba municipalities. It has an area of 600,2 Km2, and the lowest population density in the district,  (11,84 inhabitants by Km2).

 
The municipality registered between 1991 and 2001, an inhabitants decrease in about  5,5%. Therefore, resident population went from 7525 individuals in 1991 to 7109 in 2001.

Population ageing, despite being less serious than in other municipalities, it is also significant in Portel. In fact, old population is 24%from total effective, but young people have a really low expression (around 14%).

Analysing active population according to school qualification level, we observe a significant importance of primary school (41.99%), followed by pre-secondary school (18.59%). The other school education levels have considerably low expression. In fact, Portel municipality have a strong presence of school levels inferior to secondary school.

Concerning active population by activity sectors, most part of employed population works in services sector(31.22%), with major preponderance of female sex. Next, follows agriculture (26.06%), that still plays an important role in the municipality's economy. On teh other hand, building construction is also a main activity, mostly for male sex, while industry has a reduced significance in the municipality.
