Mora Municipality is placed in Évora's district limits, in the left  shore of Raia river, few kilometres  from Ribatejo region. It has a total area of 443,5 km2 and population density of 13,05 inhabitants by km2.

 

This municipality had a population  decrease of 12.1% in the period from 1991-2001, being most evident in men (-13%) than in women (-11.3%). This population decrease was felt in every municipal parishes, more accentuated in Mora, maybe because it's chief parish. Nowadays, population in the municipality is 5788 individuals.

 

Analysing resident population Index Rates in 2001, we observe that only around 11.01% represents young people, so that we consider an aged population in the base. The same way it can be considered old in the top, once old people represent around 30.03% of total population.  For every 100 effective population, there are in the municipality around 11 young people and 30 old people, meaning a high ageing rate (272.85%). We cMora is eldest municipality from Évora district.

 

Concerning school education levels, in Mora municipality in 2001, 39,7% of active population had Primary School, mostly women. There was also a considerable percentage of effective population with Pre-Secondary and Secondary School, namely male. In what concerns to Superior Education there is a low expression in population  (8,97%), but from this number mostly are women. In this municipality,school qualification is very low, what is reflected in development process. 


Considering data from active population distribution by activity sectors, 37.41% of employed population occupies services sector, mainly female sex. Agriculture still is very important in the municipality economical life, mostly to men, with sunflower, corn and other cultivation. Industrial sector begins to develop especially with some cork factories, furniture units, cement artefacts, work suits confection, and almond confectionery.

Geographic Placement

Mora municipality is placed in Évora district limits, in the left shore of Raia river, few kilometres from Ribatejo region. It has an important rail net, with EN 251, connecting Lisboa/Badajoz. It also has connection with Castelo Branco.
