Montemor-o-Novo Municipality
Placed among Évora,Vendas Novas and Coruche Municipalities, Montemor-o-Novo is second major municipality in Évora's district, with a 1232,4 Km2 area. It is divided in 10 parishes and has a population density of 15,07 inhabitants for Km2.
Between 1991 and 2001, this municipality registered a slight decrease of resident population (-0.3), mostly in male sex, female sex effective had a very low decrease (0.2). The municipality's resident population in 2001 was 18578 effective.
Analysing resident population age structure, we notice the existence of a high population ageing. In fact, around 25% of population is more than 65 years old, meaning a high dependence from active population.
Most part of active population only has primary school (37.26%), there is a considerable percentage of effective population with Secondary School (20.70%). concerning the effective distribution by sex and by school education level, there is a significant number of women without any school education from the total number (64.03%).
In economical terms, it is to enhance activities related to agriculture, cattle and forestry, with cork, olive oil, wine and honey production. The Municipality's industrial component is reflected in agro-food industries, wood and cork objects, metallic products fabrication, and mineral products.
Economic activities with more work ranks in the municipality are tertiary sector, namely commerce and services. Agriculture is also significant, especially in rural parishes. Concerning employment distribution by sex, we can observe that men work in services nad building constructio, and women in services and commerce.
