Évora Municipality
Évora Municipality, district chief town, is the major municipality in terms of area, occupying 1306,3 km2 with a total number of 19 parishes. These are divided into rural and urban, 7 parishes have a more urban character and the other 12 are rural.
Being chief town of district, Évora's Municipality has a high number of services of central character to the region, namely in what concerns central Administration services.
At population level, this municipality has registered, between 1991 and 2001, a slight increase of 5,1 %, being more significant in urban parishes. Nowadays, Évora's municipality has an effective resident population of 56519. Even though the significant population ageing, this is the municipality were these phenomenon is lower, representing 123,64 %.
In terms of school qualifications, the municipality's resident population has favourable teaching levels, when compared to the other municipalities. In fact, a good part has Secondary School (26.16%), followed by Primary School (25.82%) and Superior Education, which has a very significant percentage of effective population (21.70%).
The services sector occupies around half the population number, namely administration and other public services, including education and health. Agriculture still is an important activity for the municipality, still increasing wealth, even despite having a reduced workforce, substituted by mechanization and modernization registered in the last decades.

Évora's Municipality is bordered in the north by Arraiolos and Estremoz Municipalities, West with Montemor-o-Novo, Viana do Alentejo and East with Reguengos de Monsaraz and Redondo. This municipality has a privileged placement, because it is crossed by two main national railway axes, Lisbon/Madrid and North/South. |
