Estremoz Municipality
Estremoz Municipality is integrated in the so called "Marble Area", is bordered with Borba, Évora, Redondo, Sousel, Fronteira and Monforte Municipalities. It occupies an area of 514 km2 and has a total number of 13 parishes.
Even though population ageing is evident, between 1991 e 2001, Estremoz Municipality had a population increase of around 1.4%, from 15461 effective population to 15672. This population growth was more accented in male gender (1.7%) and mostly in the municipality urban parishes.
Around 33% of active population has Primary School. In this municipality, the percentage of active population with Secondary and Superior Education is significant, in the first case, men are the major part, and in the second, women have more expression, meaning that school abandonment after secondary school is more regular in men. In what concerns active population without school education, female sex represents 61.78%.
Concerning economical activity, services sector is the major employer, with around 38% of the municipality's active population. Placed in a rich marble area, extraction is one of the most important activities, aside wine and olive oil production.
On the other hand, in terms of art craft, Estremoz Municipality is known by its pottery pieces and leather clothes.

Estremoz Municipality is placed in a region known as "Marble Area", sub-region where Alandroal, Borba and Vila Viçosa municipalities are also integrated. It is limited by north by Sousel, Fronteira and Monforte municipalities, east by Borba's municipality, south by Évora and Redondo, and west by Arraiolos, the access is made by A6, EN 245 e EN 4. |
