Borba Municipality, placed in the extreme northern area of Évora District belongs to the so called "Marble Area" along with Estremoz and Vila Viçosa Municipalities. This region is so called considering transformation and extraction economic activities that are practised here, these are the municipality main economical activities, generating most part of work ranks, namely for men.  


In terms of population,  the municipality had registered between 1991 e 2001, a slight decrease of 5,7%. Therefore, the population resident in Borba in 2001was of 7782 effective people.

 

Concerning the population characteristics, this municipality presents an aged population. According to Ageing Indexes, there are 178 old people for every 100 young people. Despite this, the number is not so high as in other municipalities, but still, it is very emphasised.However, and  contradicting the region's situation, Borba is the municipality with major population density, with a total number of 53,70 inhabitants by Km2 divided by its 4 parishes.

 

In its majority, active population from Borba's Municipality has primary school (36.52%). However, this is a significant percentage of individuals with Secondary School (20.97%). Women enhance themselves by the analysis time for having any school qualification level, representing 62.62% of total active population without school education. Nonetheless, there also women that lead population with Superior Education.

 

In Borba Municipality, and according to most part of Évora District Municipalities, unemployment is more incident in female gender, and in age group from 25 to 44 years old.

Geographic  Placement


Borba Municipality is an Alentejo Municipality, placed in the extreme north area of Évora District, by north has Portalegre and Vila Viçosa Districts, by south Alandroal and Redondo and west Estremoz Municipality. It is served by Highway 6 with easy access to IP2 (10 Km). This municipality  still has access by 254 National Road, connecting to the chief town, Évora.
