Alandroal Municipality

Alandroal Municipality is bordered with Vila Viçosa, Elvas, Redondo, Reguengos de Monsaraz and Mourão Municipalities. It has a 544,1 km2 area and population density of 12,10 inhabitants by km2.

Resident Population is of 6585 individuals (2001), between 1991 and 2001, the municipality had a population decrease of 10.4%, being more evident in male sex (-11.2%).

Resident Population in Alandroal Municipality is old, with high percentage of old people (27.95%) and a small percentage of young people (12.37%). Analysing Total Dependency Ratio (67.52%) we see that a high part of population is depending on active population, because in every 100 potentially active individuals there are around 68 inactive individuals (young and old people). Therefore, Alandroal Municipality, is second with high population ageing in Évora District (226,05%).

Concerning active population, it is characterized by low qualifications, in a way that almost half active people has Primary School. The other education levels have no expression, mostly Superior Education, representing only 5.83% of active population.

Economic activities with more expression are agriculture and industry, the last one with marble extraction and transformation and building construction. Services sector is also very important in generating work ranks, namely in urban parishes.

Geographic Placement

Alandroal Municipality is bordered with Vila Viçosa by north,Elvas north-east, west with Redondo and Reguengos de Monsaraz and south with Mourão. East is totally delimited by Guadiana river. there are several accesses in the municipality, by national road 255, the axe Vila Viçosa-Reguengos de Monsaraz, or by National Road 373, in Badajoz-Évora axe.
